Eight medical personnel will stand trial for criminal negligence in the death of the iconic Argentine athlete Diego Maradona.
A judge ordered a culpable murder trial after a medical panel found that Maradona’s treatment had “deficiencies and anomalies.”
At the age of 60, Maradona passed away in Buenos Aires after a heart attack in November 2020.
After having surgery to remove a cerebral blood clot earlier that month, he was recuperating at home.
A few days following his death, Argentine prosecutors opened an inquiry into the medical professionals who treated him.
Maradona’s medical staff performed “inappropriately, deficiently, and recklessly.”
According to the 20-person panel of specialists tasked with investigating his death last year.
The football player also “would have had a higher chance of life” with sufficient care received in a suitable medical institution, the court said in its decision.
Leopoldo Luque, the neurosurgeon and personal physician of Maradona, as well as a psychiatrist, a psychologist, two medical professionals, two nursing staff members.
And their supervisor are all accused. Each of them has rejected being to blame for his demise.
All eight accused will be tried under the legal definition of murder, which is negligence resulting in death.
Argentine law punishes the crime with 8 to 25 years in prison. The trial’s date is unknown.
Maradona also was “in a condition of helplessness” at the time of his passing.

According to Mario Baudry, an attorney representing one of Maradona’s kids, who spoke to Reuters.
“I immediately identified the reason as murder after seeing it. I struggled for a very long period, and know that this stage is over, “said he.
Two of Maradona’s daughters’ complaints served as the impetus for legal action.
Their father’s care following brain surgery raised concerns.Dr. Luque sobbed at a tearful news appearance in November 2020, claiming he had done all in his power to preserve the life of a friend.
The doctor also once responded to reporters by saying: “You ask what my responsibilities are.
For having cared for him, for loving him, for extending his life, and for enhancing it until the very end.”
The physician claimed to have attempted “everything, up to the impossible.”
Diego Maradona is considered one of the game’s finest. 1986 World Cup champion Argentina.
He served as captain and scored the infamous “Hand of God” goal against England in the quarterfinals.
Maradona also battled cocaine addiction throughout the second part of his career and was suspended for 15 months in 1991 after testing positive for the substance.
Many hundreds of people stood in line for hours to pass by his casket at the presidential palace in Buenos Aires after learning of his passing.
His death also deeply affected his native Argentina.
